Sandeep Deshpande Backs Mandatory Marathi for Drivers, Stresses Respect for Local Language

Date:

Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Sandeep Deshpande has strongly supported the idea of making Marathi compulsory for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers in Maharashtra, stating that respecting the local language is essential for anyone living or working in the state.

Speaking in Mumbai, Deshpande said that every state in India has its own linguistic and cultural identity, and it is important for people residing there to respect and adapt to it. He emphasised that whether someone is living in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, or Gujarat, they should make an effort to understand and use the local language.

According to him, language is not just a medium of communication but also a symbol of culture and identity. He said that when individuals come to a state for work or business, they should show respect to the local traditions and language of that region.

Deshpande stated that in Maharashtra, Marathi holds a special place, and it is expected that those engaged in public-facing professions, such as taxi and auto-rickshaw drivers, should be able to communicate in Marathi with local residents. He said that this is particularly important in cities like Mumbai, where people from different parts of the country come together.

He further added that learning the local language helps in better communication with customers, reduces misunderstandings, and improves the overall service experience. According to him, it also helps individuals integrate more easily into the local community.

The MNS leader pointed out that the demand for making Marathi compulsory for drivers is not new and has been raised multiple times in the past. He said that such a step would ensure that local residents do not face difficulties while interacting with drivers, especially in everyday situations.

Deshpande also warned against what he described as a dismissive or arrogant attitude towards the local language. He said that if someone openly refuses to learn or respect Marathi while working in Maharashtra, it reflects a lack of respect for the state and its people.

He stated that those who show such an attitude may face strong reactions, adding that people expect a basic level of respect for their language and culture. However, he emphasised that the focus should be on encouraging awareness and understanding rather than conflict.

The issue of language has often been a sensitive topic in Maharashtra, particularly in the context of employment and migration. Political parties like the MNS have frequently highlighted the importance of protecting Marathi identity and ensuring opportunities for local residents.

Deshpande’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about regulations for public service providers, including drivers, and whether language proficiency should be made a requirement. Supporters of the move argue that it would improve communication and service quality, while critics believe it may create challenges for migrant workers.

Observers note that cities like Mumbai are highly diverse, with people from different linguistic backgrounds living and working together. In such an environment, balancing inclusivity with respect for local identity becomes an important consideration.

Deshpande reiterated that the intention is not to exclude anyone but to ensure that those working in Maharashtra respect its culture and language. He said that learning Marathi is not difficult and can be achieved with effort and willingness.

He concluded by stating that mutual respect is the foundation of a harmonious society, and language plays a key role in building that respect.

The remarks highlight the ongoing debate around language, identity, and integration in Maharashtra, with a focus on ensuring respect for local culture while maintaining social harmony.
