“Voting is Not Just a Right, It’s Power”: Thakore Mandhata Jadeja Urges Strong Participation in Rajkot

Date:

RAJKOT – As polling for the high-stakes 2026 Gujarat Local Body Elections got underway on Sunday, Thakore Mandhata Jadeja, the titular head of the erstwhile royal family of Rajkot, made a significant public appearance to cast his vote and deliver a message to the citizens. Speaking to the press outside the polling station, Jadeja underscored the weight of the democratic process, framing the act of voting as the ultimate tool for civic accountability.

The Power of the Ballot

Addressing a crowd of reporters, Mandhata Jadeja emphasized that democracy is not a spectator sport. He urged citizens to recognize that their influence on governance begins at the ballot box and warned that staying away from the polls effectively silences one’s voice in the years to follow.

His remarks come at a time when urban centers like Rajkot have historically seen lower turnouts compared to rural districts. By casting his vote early, Jadeja aimed to set a precedent for the community, encouraging others to brave the rising summer temperatures to participate in the “festival of democracy.”

A Critical Test for Rajkot

Rajkot remains one of the key battlegrounds in this election cycle. As one of the 15 municipal corporations going to the polls, the city is a central focus for the major political parties, including the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The 2026 local polls are particularly noteworthy as they are the first to be held following the implementation of:

  • 27% Reservation for OBCs: A historic shift in seat allocation for local bodies.
  • Multi-EVM System: A new logistical approach introduced by the State Election Commission (SEC) to handle the large volume of candidates in municipal wards.

In Rajkot, the contest has taken on a personal dimension for many, with high-profile candidates and local influencers like the Rajkot royal family playing a symbolic role in motivating the public.

Turnout and Trends

Early reports from the State Election Commission indicated a steady but slow start in Rajkot, consistent with trends across other major corporations like Ahmedabad and Surat. While rural bodies saw turnouts exceeding 20% by mid-morning, urban municipal corporations hovered around 15% in the initial hours.

The SEC has deployed over 4.4 lakh polling staff across the state to manage the 49,591 polling stations. In Rajkot, authorities have categorized several booths as “sensitive,” ensuring a heavy security presence to maintain a peaceful voting environment.

The Road to Results

With the voting window closing at 6:00 PM today, the focus will soon shift to the counting centers. While today serves as the primary voting day, a buffer day has been scheduled for April 27 in case technical glitches with the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) or other security concerns necessitate a re-poll in specific booths.

The official counting of votes is set for April 28, with final results expected to be declared by the evening. The outcome will be seen as a litmus test for the ruling administration and a barometer for the political mood ahead of the 2027 State Assembly elections.

As Mandhata Jadeja concluded his address, his message remained clear: the strength of Rajkot’s local governance depends entirely on the collective will of its voters. “Every single vote contributes to the direction our city takes,” he added, before departing the polling center.
