Tragedy in Rajkot: Four Family Members Drown During Outing at Aji Dam

Date:

RAJKOT, GUJARAT — What was intended to be a peaceful afternoon of prayer and family bonding turned into an unimaginable tragedy on Saturday. Four members of a local family drowned in the waters of the Aji Dam in Rajkot, sending shockwaves through the community and leaving a local neighborhood in deep mourning.

The incident occurred near the Mata Temple, a popular site for devotees located on the banks of the dam. According to local authorities and eyewitness accounts, the victims had traveled to the site for darshan (worship) before the day took a fatal turn.

The Sequence of Events

The family group, led by Bharat Jadhav, a 42-year-old rickshaw owner and resident of the city, arrived at the dam in the afternoon. After performing their rituals at the temple, the younger members of the family reportedly entered the water to bathe—a common practice for visitors to the reservoir during the warmer months.

The tragedy began when Rohit Jadhav, 26, ventured into a deeper section of the water and began to struggle. Sensing the immediate danger, his younger brother, Dhaval Jadhav (18), and their cousin, Dhruv Makwana (15), rushed in to pull him to safety. However, the treacherous currents and the unpredictable depth of the dam floor quickly overwhelmed the young men.

Witnessing his sons and nephew fighting for their lives, Bharat Jadhav made a desperate, heroic attempt to save them. Despite his efforts, the water proved too powerful. Within minutes, all four individuals disappeared beneath the surface as onlookers watched in horror and raised the alarm.

Emergency Response and Search Operations

The Rajkot Fire Brigade and local police, led by DCP Hetal Patel, arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the distress call. A massive search and rescue operation was launched immediately.

DCP Patel, addressing the media at the site, confirmed the grim details of the incident. She noted that while the area is a frequent spot for visitors, the underwater terrain can be deceptive, especially near the dam’s edge where silt and sudden drops create hazardous conditions.

By Saturday evening, rescue divers had successfully retrieved three bodies:

  1. Bharat Jadhav (42)
  2. Dhaval Jadhav (18)
  3. Dhruv Makwana (15)

As of the latest reports, search teams are still working tirelessly to locate the body of 26-year-old Rohit Jadhav. The operation has been hampered by fading light and the vast expanse of the reservoir, but authorities have pledged to continue the search until he is found.

A Community in Mourning

The news has cast a dark cloud over the Jadhav family’s neighborhood. Friends and neighbors described Bharat as a hardworking man and a devoted father who was well-known in the local rickshaw community. The loss of two generations of a single family in one afternoon has left the local residents reeling.

This incident serves as a harrowing reminder of the dangers posed by water bodies during the summer and monsoon seasons. Local administration officials have often issued warnings against venturing deep into the Aji Dam, citing the risks of hidden whirlpools and soft mud.

Safety Concerns at Public Reservoirs

In the wake of this disaster, many are calling for stricter safety measures around the Aji Dam and similar sites in Gujarat. While these locations are spiritual and recreational hubs, the lack of designated “safe zones” or permanent lifeguards remains a critical issue.

Safety Tips for Visitors:

  • Avoid Unknown Depths: Never enter water bodies where the depth has not been officially marked.
  • Heed Warnings: Respect “No Swimming” signs and local administrative orders.
  • Supervise Minors: Ensure children and teenagers are never left unattended near the water’s edge.
  • Call for Help: In an emergency, alert professional rescuers rather than attempting a rescue if you are not trained, as multiple fatalities often occur during “rescue chain” attempts.

The bodies of the recovered victims have been sent to the Rajkot Civil Hospital for post-mortem examinations. The local police have registered a case of accidental death and are continuing their investigation into the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
