Adani Ports Explores Acquisition of UK’s Largest Port Operator Associated British Ports

Date:

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) is reportedly evaluating a potential bid for Associated British Ports (ABP), the United Kingdom’s largest port operator, in a move that could mark one of the company’s biggest international infrastructure investments. Discussions are at an early stage and may not necessarily result in a formal offer.

If completed, the transaction could be valued at more than £10 billion, making it one of the largest overseas acquisitions by an Indian infrastructure company

Associated British Ports owns and operates 21 ports across England, Scotland, and Wales, including strategically important ports such as Southampton and those in the Humber region.

Its network handles approximately 25% of the UK’s seaborne trade, serving a wide range of industries including:

  • Container cargo
  • Automobiles
  • Dry bulk cargo
  • Liquid bulk cargo
  • Cruise operations
  • Industrial real estate

This extensive portfolio makes ABP one of Europe’s most significant port infrastructure operators.

The proposed acquisition aligns with Adani Ports’ strategy of expanding its international logistics and maritime infrastructure presence.

A successful deal would:

  • Strengthen Adani’s global port portfolio.
  • Expand operations into the UK market.
  • Enhance international cargo handling capabilities.
  • Diversify revenue streams.
  • Increase its presence in global supply chains.

The move follows Adani Ports’ broader efforts to grow its overseas infrastructure business.

Responding to media reports, an APSEZ spokesperson said the company does not comment on market speculation or rumours, while adding that it continuously evaluates opportunities aligned with its long-term strategy and value creation goals.

According to reports, CPP Investments and Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System (OMERS) together own around 64% of Associated British Ports.

Earlier reports indicated that several global infrastructure investors and port operators have also shown preliminary interest in ABP, suggesting that any eventual sale process could attract strong competition.

If the acquisition proceeds, it could offer several strategic advantages:

  • Greater integration of global logistics networks.
  • Improved connectivity between European and Asian trade routes.
  • Expansion into one of Europe’s largest maritime markets.
  • Increased operational scale for international cargo movement.

The acquisition would also reinforce the growing international presence of Indian infrastructure companies

Global ports are critical to international trade and supply chains. A successful acquisition of Associated British Ports would significantly strengthen Adani Ports’ global footprint while demonstrating the growing role of Indian companies in managing world-class infrastructure assets.
