PALGHAR, MAHARASHTRA – What began as a hopeful family journey turned into a scene of devastation on Friday evening, May 1, 2026, when a violent road accident occurred on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway. The incident, which took place near Chinchpada in the Dahanu taluka, has left one person dead and at least 15 others hospitalized with serious injuries.
The victims, identified as members of the Lad and Prajapati families from Bilimora, Gujarat, were reportedly traveling to Mumbai International Airport to see off a family member. Their journey was tragically cut short around 6:00 PM when their Tempo Traveller suffered a mechanical failure that triggered a chain reaction of chaos.
A Catastrophic Chain of Events
According to preliminary reports from the Palghar police and eyewitnesses, the mini-traveler bus was cruising toward Mumbai when its rear tire suddenly burst. The driver, attempting to regain control of the wobbling vehicle, slowed down significantly.
However, a heavy trailer truck traveling at high speed directly behind the bus was unable to react in time. The truck rammed into the rear of the mini-bus with immense force, crushing the back section of the vehicle where several passengers were seated.
The impact was so severe that the mini-bus was propelled forward, and the interior of the vehicle became a tangle of metal and shattered glass. Local residents and fellow commuters were the first to rush to the scene, working frantically to pull trapped passengers from the wreckage before emergency services arrived.
Casualties and Medical Emergency
Tragically, 60-year-old Pushpaben Lad sustained fatal injuries and passed away despite efforts to save her. The remaining 15 passengers, including a 1.5-year-old toddler, suffered injuries ranging from deep lacerations to bone fractures and head trauma.
The injured have been identified as:
- Nainaben Lad (52)
- Tinkle Lad (29)
- Jagdish Lad (51)
- Hardik Lad (31)
- Dhaval Lad (32)
- Vicky Prajapati (27)
- Trisha Lad (15)
- Jay Lad (20)
- Jayesh Prajapati (50)
- Pravin Lad (62)
- Gita Prajapati (50)
- Tejal Prajapati (25)
- Shyam Lad (29)
- Kavan Lad (1.5 years)
- Darshan Lad (29)
All victims were rushed to the Kasa Sub-District Hospital. Medical officials have stated that while many are being stabilized, at least six individuals remain in critical condition and may be shifted to specialized trauma centers in Mumbai or Gujarat for further treatment.
Highway Chaos and Investigation
The collision caused a massive traffic gridlock on the Mumbai-bound lane of the national highway. For several hours, vehicles were backed up for kilometers as police teams from Kasa and Manor worked to clear the debris and move the damaged vehicles to the shoulder of the road.
Local authorities have confirmed the following details regarding the investigation:
- Hit-and-Run Element: Reports suggest that the driver of the heavy vehicle that struck the bus fled the scene immediately after the collision. Police are currently scanning CCTV footage from nearby toll plazas to identify and apprehend the driver.
- Safety Concerns: This section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway has long been under scrutiny for safety lapses. The combination of high-speed transit and frequent mechanical failures has turned this stretch into a “black spot” for accidents.
- Official Response: Palghar police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act.
A Somber Reminder
This accident comes on a day when the state was celebrating Maharashtra Day, casting a shadow of grief over the region. It serves as a grim reminder of the vital importance of vehicle maintenance—specifically tire health—and the need for strict adherence to safe following distances, especially for heavy-duty vehicles on high-speed corridors.
As the Lad family mourns the loss of a matriarch and prays for the recovery of their loved ones, the community once again calls for better highway patrolling and stricter speed governance on one of India’s busiest transit routes.
