SURAT, GUJARAT – The industrial landscape of South Gujarat took center stage on Friday as the third edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) officially commenced at AURO University. The high-profile event, which brought together global diplomats, industry titans, and Union leaders, underscored Gujarat’s pivotal role in India’s journey toward becoming a global economic powerhouse.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, alongside Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil, and State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
India’s Energy Resilience: “Shielding the Common Citizen”
In a keynote address that resonated with the themes of stability and strategic planning, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted India’s remarkable resilience amid global energy disruptions. Addressing the gathering, Puri noted that despite significant volatility in international markets—compounded by the recent closure of the Strait of Hormuz and escalating freight costs—the Indian government has successfully “shielded” its citizens from retail price shocks.
The Minister revealed that over the last decade, India has significantly diversified its energy sources, expanding its crude oil procurement from 27 countries to 41. This diversification now includes supplies from the U.S., Norway, and Algeria, reducing the nation’s over-reliance on any single region.
Key Energy Highlights from the Minister’s Address:
- Refinery Excellence: Gujarat now processes 40% of India’s crude and produces 60% of its LPG.
- Production Surge: Domestic LPG production has increased by 60%, jumping from 36,000 MT per day to 54,000 MT per day.
- Self-Reliance: India now produces 60% of its LPG requirements domestically, a major milestone for the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative.
South Gujarat: The Engine of Innovation
The conference, which focuses specifically on the development of the South Gujarat region, has attracted over 17,000 registrations and representatives from 27 countries, including partner nations like Japan, Singapore, and Russia.
The two-day summit aims to catalyze growth in sectors that form the backbone of the local economy, particularly the textile and diamond industries. Discussions are set to focus on AI-driven modernization, sustainable weaving practices, and the integration of MSMEs into global supply chains.
A Multi-Dimensional Exhibition
Running alongside the conference is a massive 12,000-square-meter exhibition at AURO University. The event features:
- Country Pavilions: Dedicated spaces for international partners, including a prominent Japan pavilion.
- Innovation Hubs: Over 30 startup stalls showcasing cutting-edge solutions in green energy and circular economy.
- Mango Festival: A first-of-its-kind festival running from May 1 to 5, featuring carbide-free mangoes from 50 local farmers.
- Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet: Facilitating direct interaction between over 45 foreign buyers and local exporters.
Strategic Vision for 2026 and Beyond
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel emphasized that the Vibrant Gujarat model, envisioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has evolved from a simple investment summit into a comprehensive platform for regional empowerment. The state’s focus on GIFT City, green hydrogen, and aerospace is designed to ensure that Gujarat remains at the forefront of India’s industrial revolution.
As the conference moves into its second day, the focus will shift toward the MSME Conclave, gems and jewelry, and urban economic development plans for the Surat Economic Region.
For the people of South Gujarat, this summit is more than a policy discussion—it is a roadmap for a future defined by technological integration, energy security, and sustainable prosperity.
