A New Era Dawns: Suvendu Adhikari Sworn In as West Bengal’s First BJP Chief Minister

Date:

KOLKATA, WEST BENGAL — In a historic political shift that has reshaped the landscape of eastern India, Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the Chief Minister of West Bengal on Saturday, May 9, 2026. The ceremony, held at the iconic Brigade Parade Ground, marked the official beginning of the first-ever Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in the state’s history, effectively ending the 15-year tenure of the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

The atmosphere in Kolkata was electric as thousands of supporters, many having traveled from the furthest corners of North Bengal and neighboring states, gathered to witness the transition of power. The date of the ceremony was notably symbolic, coinciding with the 165th birth anniversary of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, a move the new administration described as a commitment to restoring the cultural and intellectual pride of “Sonar Bangla.”

A Conclave of National Leadership

The swearing-in was a high-profile assembly of India’s top political brass, signaling the national importance of the BJP’s victory in Bengal. Prime Minister Narendra Modi graced the occasion, appearing on stage alongside Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Lending a sense of federal unity to the event, several prominent leaders arrived at the Kolkata airport earlier in the morning to attend the proceedings:

  • Andhra Pradesh CM N. Chandrababu Naidu: His presence highlighted the growing synergy within the NDA alliance.
  • Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel: Representing the Prime Minister’s home state, Patel’s visit emphasized the “double-engine” model of development the party aims to implement in Bengal.
  • Union Minister Ram Mohan Naidu: The young leader joined the delegation, underscoring the support from various regional allies.

Other notable attendees included the Chief Ministers of Assam, Tripura, and Uttarakhand, making the event one of the largest gatherings of state heads in the “City of Joy” in recent years.

The Path to Power: A Historic Mandate

The 2026 Assembly elections will be remembered for the BJP’s decisive performance, where the party secured 207 seats in the 294-member house. Suvendu Adhikari, often referred to as a “giant killer,” solidified his leadership by winning a historic double victory in both the Nandigram and Bhabanipur constituencies.

Following the administration of the oath of office by Governor R.N. Ravi, Adhikari was joined by a five-member cabinet in the first phase of government formation. The newly sworn-in ministers include:

  1. Dilip Ghosh
  2. Agnimitra Paul
  3. Ashok Kirtania
  4. Kshudiram Tudu
  5. Nisith Pramanik

This initial cabinet reflects a strategic balance of regional representation, including leaders from the Junglemahal tribal belt and North Bengal.

A Vision for “Sonar Bangla”

In his first address after taking the oath, Chief Minister Adhikari vowed to lead a government that is “inclusive, transparent, and development-oriented.” He emphasized that the era of political friction between the state and the center has come to an end.

Prime Minister Modi, who bowed before the massive crowd at the Brigade Parade Ground, described the win as a “pleasant coincidence” occurring on Tagore’s birth anniversary, suggesting a spiritual and cultural rebirth for the state.

Looking Ahead

As the new government takes charge, the immediate challenges will include streamlining the state’s finances and implementing a series of promised central welfare schemes that had previously seen limited reach in the state.

While the political transition remains a point of intense debate, the presence of national leaders like Chandrababu Naidu and Bhupendra Patel suggests that the new West Bengal administration is poised to integrate more closely with national economic and developmental goals. For the people of Bengal, the day was more than just a ceremony; it was the start of a significant new chapter in the state’s modern history.
