Ahmedabad, Gujarat: Strengthening the economic ties between the “Land of Entrepreneurs” and the “Soul of Incredible India,” Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi arrived in Ahmedabad this week to spearhead a high-profile investor outreach program. Organized by the Government of Odisha in strategic partnership with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the visit marks a significant step in Odisha’s aggressive pursuit of industrial diversification and global investment.
The Chief Minister’s visit is centered around a series of “Investor Roadshows” designed to showcase Odisha’s burgeoning potential as a premier industrial hub in Eastern India. This outreach serves as a crucial precursor to the upcoming “Utkarsh Odisha: Make in Odisha Conclave 2025,” the state’s flagship biennial investment summit.
A Vision for “Samruddha Odisha”
Upon his arrival, CM Majhi emphasized that his government is committed to transforming Odisha into a $500 billion economy. The choice of Ahmedabad as a key destination for this roadshow is strategic; Gujarat’s prowess in chemicals, textiles, and manufacturing provides a perfect template for synergy with Odisha’s rich natural resources and newly developed industrial infrastructure.
Strategic Focus Areas
The delegation, which includes Chief Secretary Anu Garg and Additional Chief Secretary (Industries) Hemant Sharma, held one-on-one meetings with top business leaders. The primary sectors targeted during this Ahmedabad leg include:
- Chemicals and Petrochemicals: Leveraging Odisha’s massive PCPIR (Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemical Investment Region) at Paradeep.
- Textiles and Apparel: Seeking to draw on Gujarat’s expertise to boost Odisha’s emerging textile parks.
- Green Energy: Promoting investments in Green Hydrogen and Ammonia, where Odisha aims to be a national leader.
- Information Technology and ESDM: Highlighting the incentives offered by the state’s new IT Policy.
Why Investors are Looking East
During the FICCI-organized event, officials highlighted several key factors that make Odisha an attractive destination for Gujarati businessmen:
- Strategic Maritime Location: With deep-water ports like Paradeep, Dhamra, and Gopalpur, Odisha offers a gateway to the ASEAN markets.
- Stable Governance: A proactive administration focused on rapid single-window clearances.
- Abundant Natural Resources: Beyond minerals, the state is now focusing on its 480 km coastline for blue economy opportunities.
- Skilled Workforce: Ongoing investments in “World Skill Centers” ensure a steady supply of industry-ready talent.
Strengthening Federal Cooperation
The visit also underscores a growing trend of “competitive and cooperative federalism,” where states actively engage with one another to build cross-border industrial corridors. CM Majhi’s itinerary included a visit to the Mundra Port to study world-class logistics infrastructure, which the Odisha government aims to replicate and adapt to its own coastal developments.
As the roadshow concludes, the Odisha government expects to sign several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) that will not only bring capital into the state but also create thousands of high-quality jobs for the youth of Odisha.
The message from Ahmedabad is clear: Odisha is no longer just the “mineral capital” of India; it is rapidly evolving into a diversified industrial powerhouse ready for the global stage. Industry leaders and stakeholders are now looking forward to the grand Make in Odisha Conclave in early 2025, where these initial discussions are expected to materialize into multi-crore investments.
