AI 171 Crash Investigation: Union Minister Naidu Promises Final Report Within a Month

Date:

GANDHINAGAR – Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu provided a crucial update on the ongoing investigation into the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI 171, stating that the final probe report is expected to be released within the next month. Speaking on the sidelines of the Aircraft Leasing and Financing Summit 2.0 at GIFT City, the Minister emphasized that while the wait has been long, the thoroughness of the investigation is paramount to ensuring international credibility.

The ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed on June 12, 2025, shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The accident resulted in a total of 260 fatalities, including 241 people on board and 19 individuals on the ground in the Meghaninagar area. As the one-year anniversary of the tragedy approaches, the government aims to provide closure to the families and the aviation community.

Commitment to Rigorous and Independent Scrutiny

During the press conference, Minister Naidu addressed concerns regarding the timeline of the investigation. He clarified that major aviation accidents involving international routes and foreign nationals require a level of precision that cannot be rushed.

The Minister reiterated that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is conducting the probe independently. He noted that the government has provided all necessary resources and technical support to the AAIB but maintains a strict policy of non-interference to protect the integrity of the findings.

Uncovering the Technical Mystery

The preliminary report, released in July 2025, hinted at a complex sequence of events. Data revealed that the fuel supply to both engines was cut off within a one-second interval shortly after takeoff.

Key areas of the final investigation include:

  • Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) Analysis: Clarifying the communication between pilots regarding the engine shutdowns.
  • Component Examination: Detailed assessment of the Dreamliner’s technical systems and potential manufacturing defects.
  • Human and Organizational Factors: Evaluating training protocols and operational decisions made during the flight’s final moments.

Addressing Victim Families and Compensation

Minister Naidu also touched upon the welfare of the victims’ families, many of whom have voiced concerns over a perceived lack of communication from the airline. He assured that the Ministry of Civil Aviation has a dedicated cell monitoring the situation.

“We are constantly in touch with Air India and have directed them to maintain proactive interaction with the families,” the Minister said. He emphasized that the process of clearing insurance and “full and final” compensation is entering its last phase, with the ministry acting as a facilitator to resolve any lingering disputes.

Ensuring Future Safety

The AI 171 disaster was one of the most significant aviation accidents in recent Indian history. The upcoming report is expected to contain vital safety recommendations aimed at preventing similar occurrences. By following international protocols and allowing for global scrutiny, the Ministry hopes to reinforce India’s standing in global aviation safety.

As the city of Ahmedabad prepares to observe the first anniversary of the crash next month, the promise of a final report offers a glimmer of hope for answers and accountability.
